In summing up the City Soup journey we hope you will help policymakers understand that hunger is a problem the faith community cannot solve on our own, no matter how hard we try. While our charity work will continue, we cannot be satisfied helping only those whose names we know. The gaps are too deep and too wide.

Please use as much of the language in this sample letter that you find helpful as you write to public officials and leaders. Dear _________________________

As a person of faith, I am deeply concerned about the people in my (community/city/ region) who are struggling with food insecurity and hunger. Recently, my concern has motivated me to take action by joining in a group called "City Soup." I am now in the middle of a six-week interfaith study about hunger in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region.

We are alarmed at the level of denial that most Americans (and most elected officials and many religious leaders) are in on this issue. Hunger and poor nutrition have resulted in nothing less than a public health crisis. We need a plan for Philadelphia, and a plan for Pennsylvania, and a plan for the entire United States. The status quo is unacceptable. Such plans require leadership from all levels of government, members of both political parties, practitioners bringing new ideas, and from community groups and faith-based organizations who are willing to actively partner with policymakers. Please know that my study group and others using this same curriculum are prepared to partner and assist in any way we can.

I hope that you will be compelled to act on behalf of the millions of Americans who do not have the opportunity to reach their full potential because of food insecurity. This is both a moral and an economic issue, and it requires your immediate attention.

I look forward to hearing how you plan to begin to address our concerns. Please know that I routinely pray for you and your colleagues as you go about your important work.
